It’s an alternative therapy and an integral part of hydrotherapy. Ice Bath works on simple yet scientific approach that the exposure to cold helps to combat the micro trauma (small tears) in muscle fibers and resultant soreness caused by intense or repetitive exercise.
The cold causes blood vessels to tighten. This helps to drain the lactic acid out of tired muscles. When one gets out of the bath, muscle tissues warm back up, causing a return of oxygenated blood to help sore muscles recover.
The advantage of an ice bath submersion is that a large area of intertwined musculature can be treated, rather than limiting the cold therapy to a concentrated area with a localized ice pack.
Icing decreases pain and inflammation and enhances healing. Numbing a body part before running can block signals to the brain that would tell one to stop/ back off.
An Ice bath can be taken from 30 seconds to 5 minutes based on one’s acceptance, level of soreness, inflammation, etc.
